What I've been watching on TV this week

TV Times – 15th January 2012

(If you're outside the UK, here's a link to be able to watch UK TV programmes: bit.ly/oVMz60)

Just a little one (make your own joke up!), this week.

Take Me Out

pad TV Times 15th January 2012This isn't normally my sort of show, but I can't help but watch it. Why? Because – unlike Blind Date – by the time the lad picks his lass, she's not only seen him but knows a fair bit about him, and HE'S seen her and has chosen the one he likes best.

Last week's couples both seemed to get on like a house on fire on their dates, and one guy even talked about a wedding. How different is that to the nightmare stories we got on Blind Date (especially in later years, where the only people who went on it were wannabees who just wanted to be on TV and couldn't have cared less about the date)?

Paddy McGuinness is a good host: straight-talking and funny. There's some good one-liners in there and it's all jolly good stuff. I'll be watching next week too, to see if we've had more luurrve blossoming!

Milton Jones's House of Rooms

mil TV Times 15th January 2012Milton Jones's first TV show had been billed as a Series, but it's not on again this week so I checked and it appears that it was just a Pilot.

I've loved Milton Jones for years. I've got all his Radio shows on iTunes (I used to have them on mini-discs years ago!), and have seen him live several times. He's not your usual comedian, and he's not for everyone (is anyone?), but I love my one-liners and he's brilliant at them, and tells the sort of jokes my dad used to tell us when we were children (stupid ones), so how could I NOT like him?

Unlike Radio (where you have to fill the whole 30 minutes with words), this show's weak spot was that it had 'gaps' in it, and all felt a bit surreal (more than a bit, actually), and slightly spooky in places. Milton's great 'gags' (he'd popped a few old favourites in!), didn't feel part of the script as there weren't enough of them, and although I enjoyed it, I felt that someone who'd tuned-in never having heard of Milton Jones before might have found it a little 'strange', and maybe been put off.

hor TV Times 15th January 2012We're all different, of course, and there will be people who HAD never heard of him who liked it, but I just feel that it didn't quite showcase his wonderful talent enough in that half hour, and that as it does only appear to be one Episode, it might not quite have been enough for some people to have bought into.

I – however – can't wait to see more, and if you've got the taste for him after this show, Radio 4Extra are starting re-runs of Another Case of Milton Jones from tomorrow (Monday 16th). The gags come thick and fast!

PS And just when I'd got my hearing back after the last Series, suddenly MasterChef is here again! Earplugs in. Let's hope India Fisher's not back … (Review next week.)

Radio Times

A bit late to remind you, but there's a cracking hour of comedy on Radio 2 on Saturday nights at the moment. If you haven't heard Claudia Winkleman's Celebrity Quiz Show Hot Gossip or Matt Lucas's spoof Awards Show And the Winner Is, then you need to check them out right now!

(Hot Gossip/And the Winner Is Radio 2 Saturdays 10.00-11.00 pm)

Other great Radio 4/4Extra comedy this week includes: Clare in the Community; Everyone quite likes Justin (Justin Moorhouse); What to Do If You're Not Like Everybody Else (Andrew Lawrence); Cabin Pressure; Stockport: So Good They Named it Once and Party.

TV Times – 8th January 2012

(If you're outside the UK, here's a link to be able to watch UK TV programmes: bit.ly/oVMz60)

ern TV Times 8th January 2012Remember my last blog before Christmas? No, of course you don't, and neither do I, except for this bit:

I won't be watching much TV over Christmas – apart from Soaps and the Morecambe and Wise Christmas shows – but there's one thing I'll be glued to, and that's Absolutely Fabulous on Christmas Night. It's one of my all-time favourite shows. Let's hope it hasn't lost its edge …

Alas, it had.

From the first burst of canned hysterical laughter after about 30 seconds, I knew what was coming, and I'm sorry to admit that I turned it off after ten minutes as I found it quite sad and depressing. Fawlty Towers and The Office had the right idea: quit while you're ahead.

The Royle Family was TV gold when it started, but each 'Special' made it less so. Ab Fab's the same. They say you should never go back. This proves it.

I've got them both recorded, and will give them another go, but I'm scared …

office TV Times 8th January 2012Apart from the Soaps, I barely watched any TV over Christmas (apart from Morecambe and Wise), as I was stuck in the kitchen for the best part of ten days, during which time I (re) watched the whole of Seasons 1-3 of The Office, an American Workplace, then followed that with Seasons 4 and 5 which I got for Christmas. Love it.

I watched Big Fat Gypsy Christmas (what a show THAT was. The outfits the girls wear are jaw-dropping!), and – amazingly – I also watched the first 20 minutes of the BBC's Winter Wipeout shows, but ONLY because my friend's going to be on it and I don't know which Episode she's in so I've been watching them all so that I don't miss her!

Don't you dare tell anyone I said this, but I actually found myself chuckling at some of the one-liners (you know how I love my one-liners), and I thought the presenter looked a bit like that Richard Hammond (from that horrible programme that used to be about cars), but with neater hair. Turns out it IS him. Fancy that!

TV Times 8th January 2012Ha. I had the best night of TV for ages last night actually (Saturday 8th), as BBC2 had re-runs of The Good Life, Fawlty Towers and a short Python documentary. The night the Fawlty Towers Episode 'Gourmet Night' was first screened (17th October 1975), I literally couldn't breathe for laughing, and actually did laugh until I cried when Basil beat the car up with the twig!

I've seen it so many times since and I STILL laugh. I still laugh when I watch my DVDs of Ab Fab too. Such a shame there wasn't anything to laugh at with those new ones, but I will give them another go.

PS Just seen a tweet saying that the last-ever Season of Desperate Housewives starts tonight on Channel 4. How sad. I've loved that show …

The X Factor

mix TV Times 18th December 2011So, Little Mix won the X Factor. I haven't read about it this week (I've been too busy), so don't know how the Press are reacting/portraying them, but I just hope that the girls go on to be really successful and that Jesy doesn't lose a load of weight and become yet-another 'stick-insect'.

One of the things that seem to have endeared them to the public has been their sincerity and genuine thrill at getting through each week, and it would be so nice to have a Girl Band that set a good example for young women in the UK. Time will tell, but I was glad they won, and I thought that Tulisa seemed like a good mentor.

I still think that John Adams would have walked it if he hadn't been airbrushed out though …

MasterChef – The Professionals

mch TV Times 18th December 2011The first couple of Episodes of this Series were achingly dull, but it certainly picked up once Claire arrived. That girl was amazing, and all three of the finalists were very impressive.

You know when Dolby Stereo came out – or when CDs replaced vinyl? There was (and still is), such debate about the quality of the sound, but no matter how expensive your stereo system; there comes a point where your ear simply can't hear any more.

I would contest that the same is true of food. In the last few Episodes, Michel and Greg increasingly stuggled to find ever-greater superlatives to describe the candidates' dishes. Could they REALLY taste every nuance and flavour on those plates? Some of those dishes contained so many ingredients that I struggle to believe it would be possible to appreciate anything over a certain level of 'deliciousness'.

Just HOW good can one plate of food taste? Aren't we just getting a bit too far away from 'real' food (with all this sous-vide and molecular gastronomy etc), and simply being hoodwinked with a big case of The Emperor's New Clothes? It feels like Nouvelle Cuisine all over again to me.

Twenty-five years ago I was a serious 'Restaurant Junkie' and regularly ate out in some of the top places of the time. I subscribed to Caterer magazine, and was totally 'up' on all-things chef-y. I haven't got money to eat out in good Restaurants any more (so am speaking from perception and not experience), but I struggle to believe that food could taste THAT good.

TV Times 18th December 2011It's like wine: once you're at a certain price/quality level, it's all 'good', but just HOW good can it be? Does a bottle costing £1000 really taste that much better than one priced at £500, and would most people honestly be able to tell the difference?

I'm also a bit perturbed that a 'foreigner' has won for the second year running. Ash Mair is an Aussie, yet he's won our UK MasterChef. Has a UK chef won MasterChef Australia? No. I just feel that it should be for UK Chefs only, as a 'foreigner' winning – to me – devalues British Chefs (ie we're not good enough to win our own competition).

Do you agree? Let me know your thoughts. I'd be interested to hear whether you feel the same, or whether it's just me being an old fuddy-duddy!

I still loved it though, and it's been such a relief to be rid of India Fisher's narration. Sean Pertwee sounds vaguely bored by the whole thing, but at least he doesn't read every line in exactly the same way like she did (dropping her voice down at the end of every sentence).

All we need to do now is to get them to turn down/cut down the OTT dramatic music and that 'Jaws-type' drone that accompanies every plate of food put down in front of the judges and we'll have got a pretty-good show!  CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE MASTERCHEF WEBSITE

Young Apprentice

zara TV Times 18th December 2011It was the final of Young Apprentice too. I was still in mourning from the shock of losing Harry H (and Harry M), so it had lost most of its spark for me. I'd expected slimy James to win it, so it was a nice surprise to see Zara (who'd not been THAT influential throughout the process), suddenly come into her own and grab the prize.

Zara reminds me of myself. Quiet on occasions, but when put 'In Charge' of something and allowed to be the centre of attention, displays confidence and is – frankly – in her element!

I'd tweeted that she'd be able to treat herself to a new dress with her winnings, but one of my tweetie friends told me that Zara is her friend's Grand-daughter, and that they only had a few clothes with them while they were at the house apparently.

It was all jolly good stuff, and I don't know what I'm going to do with myself until either The Apprentice, Apprentice USA, MasterChef, or one of Michel Roux's 'Young Waiter' shows come on again. Roll on 2012!

images24 e1324216602801 127x160 TV Times 18th December 2011I've listened to The Archers for more years than I care to remember, but I've really struggled this year. There's some very poor child Actors, Wiww-yum Grundy's whiny voice does my head in, and the hours of time devoted to the death of Ivy Horrobin (a character that was never actually in it in all the years I've been listening – as far as I can recall), is just wearing me down.

We need a good old affair to liven things up …

The X Factor

Janet Devlin forgot her words on Saturday. The writing was on the wall after that, wasn't it? I can really empathise with her. She's only young, and singing live in front of millions of people must be a huge challenge BUT … a singer who forgets their words? A good voice and a good memory sort-of go hand-in-hand, don't they? At this stage, any little mistake will be punished – unless you're Misha B of course, who seems to be teflon-coated …

platt TV Times 27th November 2011mac TV Times 27th November 2011I did laugh at a tweet I saw on Saturday night. I thought I'd 'favourite-d' it but I hadn't, so can't remember exactly, but it sort-of said words to the effect of: "Shock horror. Marcus's Sob Story considered SO bad it couldn't be broadcast. That's upstaged Misha B."

Come on Little Mix, that's what I say!

PS Marcus and Corrie's David Platt: separated at birth?

Week 5: Deodorant; nice.

'Raw' sounded like meat, and the tube looked like (sorry!), a willy in the advert – all pink. At least they clearly showed the product in the ad though, unlike 'Vanity', which looked like something that had fallen out of a down-market Christmas Box Set.

TV Times 27th November 2011'Your scent can change, but you don't have to,' their voice-over said. In other words, 'Even if you spray our stuff under your armpits, you'll still be the same geeky person.' Not quite the right message, perhaps? When the dancing girl sprayed it across the room I had a flashback of the 'Shark-repellent Bat Spray' from the original Batman film of 1966.

In their pitch, Lizzie patronised the Executives by saying that they didn't understand what it was like to be a teenager. Er, we've all been there love. Ooh, the arrogance of youth!

Harry H delivered a cracking pitch – as ever – and there was never any question as to who was going to win this task. Gbemi was fired because she was responsible for the design. She's a designer. That doesn't bode well for the future, does it? (Young Apprentice Ep 3 BBC1 9.00 pm Monday)

There's something called 'Money' on this week. It's the first of a three-part Series and it's about how to get rich. I'll be watching. I've tried every way; read every book; work seven days a week and I'm still poorer now than I was Twenty years ago so am very keen to know what else I can try!

The X Factor

So, it was bye-bye Crate – sorry – Craig, this week then? Not before time. I'm sure he's a lovely lad, but even if you shut your eyes and listen to him sing, there just isn't anything special-enough about his voice to have got him to the final – despite Gary Barlow jumping up and down.

I really respected Gary at the beginning of this Series, but he's coming across as increasingly spiteful and childish. It's a bit embarrassing really, and I'm not sure I'd want to see him back. I did laugh when he said to Craig, "Anything you need; just give me a call." I'll bet that call goes straight to Voicemail …

mix TV Times 20th November 2011I'm now hoping that Little Mix will win. I saw them on This Morning and thought how sweet and grounded they seemed. I guess that'll change, but they seem to be quite good singers (when you can hear them above the over-loud backing tracks and the audience screaming), and I think it would make a pleasant change for a Group to win it. (The X Factor ITV1 Saturday/Sunday 8.15 pm)

MasterChef – The Professionals

I barely saw it this week, but just caught the last ten minutes of the Episode where Claire was dishing-up her meal to the Food Critics. Wow. I think from the comments she got that we can already say who this year's Winner is, and from cl TV Times 20th November 2011what I'd seen in the last couple of weeks, nobody else has even come close to her.

What an exciting new talent. I still haven't got over Phil Vickery winning 'Celebrity' MasterChef a few weeks ago. His cooking was unbelievable, and you wouldn't have known he wasn't a professional too. In fact, he's better than most of the chefs I've seen so far in this 'Professional' Series.

Sean Pertwee sounds as if he's almost nodding off with indifference as he does the narration (I have visions of him reading the paper, or watching YouTube or something as he's doing it!), but it's STILL better than what we had before. Come on guys; can you sort the music out next please?

And if you like Alan Carr, between 4.00-6.00 pm every Friday there's a jewel of a show tucked-away on wee little Swindon 105.5 FM. It's called The Big Weekender, and features Nick Anderson and Barry Harris – a sublime double act whose irreverant banter and sketches deserve a much larger audience.

nickbaz TV Times 20th November 2011Guests have no idea what they're about to face in their interviews, and you truly wonder what on earth is coming next! Like all great double acts though, they know each other inside out, and that 'Sixth Sense' they both have for where the other is 'going' with something is what makes it so addictive.

Even something as mundane as the Swindon Evening Advertiser crossword or the weather forecast becomes comedy gold in their hands, and sketches like the 'Balls Brothers, Mankini suppliers & launderers' and the 'Alabama Boys' are a joy to listen to. Trust me, you'll be hooked!

The X Factor

Saturday's show: what was THAT all about? Technical issues delaying the start of the show? Lucky they had that montage ready, wasn't it …

images4 160x160 TV Times 13th November 2011How come they've brought someone back who was voted-off weeks ago? I don't get that. They made Frankie's departure look jolly civilised too, didn't they? This show's really lost the plot I reckon. I'm liking Weetabix – sorry, Little Mix, and (since he's changed his image), Marcus now, too.

I'm sorry, but Craig doesn't look – or sound – like a pop star. He sings ok, but as his voice isn't 'special' in any way, his USP would need to be his amazing looks/persona, but he doesn't have either of those either. I'm not trying to be unkind, and that's just my opinion of course, but most people who 'make it' in the music industry tend to have both these things …

It was a bit sad to see Kitty go out. Her rendition of 'Over the Rainbow' (a song I loathe, and almost turned the sound off as she started singing), was the best I've ever heard: emotional, but without being all sentimental and sugary.  (The X Factor ITV1 Saturday/Sunday 8.15 pm)

MasterChef – The Professionals

Gastric Sauce? Oh, come on. Is this going to be the 'Next Big Thing' in Chef-speak? Who's heard of this one then? I looked it up (make sure you key in sauce and not juice!), and apparently it's a sort-of sauce/glaze made from sugar, wine vinegar and sometimes other things – like fruit.

TV Times 13th November 2011This first week's been a big yawn. The food and the candidates have been completely forgettable. The music was deafening – again – and SO unneccesary, but I stopped in my tracks when (after bracing myself as usual for India Fisher's ghastly narration), there was a man's voice instead. It turned out to be Sean Pertwee.

His narration was … different. He sounded as if he was a little bored by the whole thing but – who cares – it was 1000 times better than normal. I didn't put him on mute once!

Young Apprentice

pad TV Times 13th November 2011I loved the bit at the beginning where they were stood watching Lord Sugar's instructions on an iPad. How amazing is that, and how lucky are we to have all this incredible stuff? I love technology.

Wasn't this a great Episode? I really enjoyed it. Harry H had sent flowers to his mum. Bless. I love him! Hannah was the PM, and her comment, "I don't overlook people because I'm often overlooked myself," struck a chord with me. I know exactly how she feels, and

It's strange how they all seem to have it in for Harry M, but – of course – it's obvious. Some of them are jealous/threatened by him as he's one of the strongest candidates. He's polite, sensible and makes useful/helpful observations. It seems unreasonable to say he's not a Team Player. From what I saw, that's EXACTLY what he is, and how well did he do to sell that Heliconia? That's real salesmanship.

poof TV Times 13th November 2011He does look 'born' to floristry though – as does Lewis – although looking the part isn't always enough. "He couldn't sell flowers on Mother's Day," one of them remarked wryly.

Gbemi didn't seem to 'grasp the nettle' either. "They wouldn't want to buy flowers from us for that price when they don't even know who we are." Er, it's flowers love, not a second-hand car. You hardly need a warranty, do you? If they look nice, people will buy them. Who cares who you are?

flowers TV Times 13th November 2011Zara SO wanted to hug Lewis when they came out from that pitch, but he clearly didn't feel the same *awkward* and we saw a bit more of James' personality too. "Is that (mobile) hung up?" he asked Harry H. "Let's give them sh*ite; cheap sh*te. Cheap and cheerful," he laughed. Hmmm.

They did that alright. That mantlepiece 'display' was … well, what do you say? I don't know how those women didn't burst out laughing – or go mad. They were so charming and polite about – what was – a total disaster!

The X Factor

images2 160x160 TV Times 6th November 2011Despite myself, I watched on Saturday night (while re-watching Young Apprentice on my Mac, following it on Twitter and eating my dinner!), as I couldn't not watch to see how bad Frankie was, and – boy – he didn't disappoint. Yet-another one-line song he just talked his way through.

Gary's clearly deliberately picking songs without tunes in the increasingly desperate hope that nobody will notice that ne has NO TALENT, but everyone in the UK – apart from teenage girls (who aren't after him for his voice), and Gary have seen right through him.

john TV Times 6th November 2011Surely he can't survive another week? Misha B's performance was the best thing I've seen on this year's X Factor (except for John Adams …), but why is everyone going mad for Craig? He's got an ok voice, but – sorry mate – just doesn't look the part (despite being put on a diet). Not like John Adams. Who wouldn't choose John over that scruffy, overgrown guinea pig Frankie?

Notice how much was made of Sami's weight (and the poor girl from Weetabix)? Why isn't Craig coming under the same criticism, I wonder? Funny, that …

Monday: I didn't watch last night as I was still doing this blog, but I gather Frankie got through again. It really does beggar belief. (The X Factor ITV1 Saturday/Sunday 8.15 pm)

Four in a Bed

TV Times 6th November 2011Big moment here: do I stop watching this?

I'd said last week that some people are game-players etc, but this week turned into a near witch-hunt on one poor woman (Nancy, from the Old Court Guesthouse near Bath), just because she said the TV didn't work and that she had no hot water.

There was a guy called Paul (so full of himself that he actually laughed at everything he, himself said!), and both he and one of the others (a woman who allowed smoking in her rooms and whose dogs had the run of the place), were so patronising to this lady that I'm surprised she didn't burst into tears.

usa TV Times 6th November 2011Luckily, Nancy was American and made of sterner stuff, but maybe Paul should have considered this:

Many TVs turn on these days (particularly in Hotels), just by pressing the remote control. This one didn't. How was Nancy to know it had a switch on the side? It's not always easy to find an On/Off switch and I, too, would probably have just assumed that it wasn't working, as I've stayed in many Hotels over the years where the TV wasn't actually working but nobody had bothered to check.

And if she didn't have hot water, she didn't have hot water, mate. There's no way she could get that one wrong. Him going up there at least a couple of hours later (after she'd had breakfast, left and he'd read her feedback form), then gloating that there WAS hot water was shameful. Dur, maybe it had just re-heated by then perhaps, Paul? Did you consider that?

I've stayed in Hotels where there's been no hot water, but an hour later there was. Shame on him. It's really upset me, and I don't think I'll watch next week. It'll certainly free up some time to watch something else … (Four in a Bed Channel 4 Mon-Fri 5.00-5.30 pm)

Young Apprentice

nick TV Times 6th November 2011No offence girls, but how did you win – again? Nobody knew what your product was until the third pitch but you somehow managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat again.

It was worrying for a girl to ask whether you had to change a baby every time it dirtied its nappy or whether you could "Leave it for a bit?" Here's Karren and Nick's reaction!

baby TV Times 6th November 2011The one who designed guitar straps (bet that's a crowded marketplace), got outvoted, and Gbemi was PM. She's very scary. I'm still gobsmacked that they chose a white baby for a black mother 'because it was the best behaved'. Yeah, that makes perfect sense …

Not sure what the boys thought babies were like. Harry M kept going on about the 'nightmare' and the 'ominous task' of feeding. It's the opposite. Those few minutes spent filling their little tummies with milk are usually a blessed respite! They gave Harry M a real hard time, but he was making some valid points.

images e1320565626659 148x160 TV Times 6th November 2011James was obnoxious. "I've also got ideas Lewis," he said snootily. As for Lewis: he looks more like he should be treading the boards than in a boardroom, and puts me in mind of that super young fellow Nausius from Frankie Howerd's Up Pompeii. (Ah, you youngsters won't remember that!)

lewis e1320609051846 TV Times 6th November 2011It took Harry H to come in and rescue them from Lewis's pitching (even worse than Gbemi's!), but one of them got the boot (what was his name again?). There'll be all to play for this week now. Great stuff!

PS Who writes the narration? There were so many cringworthy one-liners about ice-cream last week, and this week we had the likes of, "Cradling their cushion idea; the girls head off." Not funny.

PPS Lord Sugar said he used to go to bed cradling a piggy bank. There's no answer to that one! (Young Apprentice Episode 2 BBC1 9.00 pm Monday)

What Else?

images1 160x159 TV Times 6th November 2011This week's Episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm is (according to Saturday's Daily Mail TV Guide), another cracker. This whole Series has been fantastic, and if you've never seen Curb, check it out, or – better still – put it on your Christmas list!

(Curb Your Enthusiasm More4 Sunday 11.05 pm)

cute TV Times 6th November 2011The Food Hospital started this week. I thought it was going to be a serious, in-depth programme, but it just turned out to be Dr Pixie in pretty-much an extra Episode of Embarrassing Doctors.

(The only good bit was this CUTE, CUTE little boy. He had migraines, but a change in his diet really helped him. Bless.)

So that's another one I won't have to watch this week now – which is lucky, as I've got a busy week coming up, and as I've also spotted that a new Series of MasterChef: The Professionals starts on Monday.

I'd only just got over India Fisher's horrific narration from Celebrity MasterChef a couple of weeks ago, and how she'll be at it again. Oh God. Still, it won't stop me watching. I'll just have to mute the sound (as usual), and it'll be a chance to see the lovely Michel Roux Jr again. Aah, bless.

chef TV Times 6th November 2011Did you see the MasterChef sketch on The Impressions Show this week? John and Greg's words were almost drowned out by the completely OTT dramatic music in the background! Glad it's not just me who notices (and complains about), these things!

The X Factor

images29 160x160 TV Times 30th October 2011I stuck to my guns and didn't watch on Saturday (I just 'watched' it on Twitter instead and it was hilarious!), but I did sneak a look at F'ing Frankie's performance on Sunday morning though.

We already know he can't sing. Is that why he just talked his two-lined song Should I stay or should I go? A tone-deaf toddler with a speech impediment and a sore throat could have given him a run for his money on that one. Here's Simon Cowell's reaction …

Monday: So, he's got through again? He should have been in the bottom two … on his own. He cannot sing; it's a joke. That's all I've got to say.

PS Wasn't Kelly's 'Monday morning phoning-in sick to work' phonecall hilarious?

rick e1319972327788 TV Times 30th October 2011 TV Times 30th October 2011It was a surprisingly quiet week this week, with the best bit being in Tuesday's hour-long programme from Telford (on More4).

Chrissie's pronunciation of the word dauphinoise was a cracker: "Dauphin-yose". Dave Lamb's commentary was ticklishly funny!

We also had Rick Wakeman's double on the night they did the face-painting.

Four in a Bed

TV Times 30th October 2011Knocking SDWM off the top spot for early-evening light entertainment this week was the new Series of Four in a Bed.

Four Bed & Breakfast owners all stay in each others' places, run their fingers along the tops of the doors for dust and then pay what they think it was all worth. Yeah; sounds gripping, doesn't it? Actually, it can be!

I tried not to watch but failed, and after five minutes of Monday's first Episode was hooked again. There's a lot of 'game-playing' goes on in this show, but there's some genuinely funny moments/great one-liners – which is why I watch (and for the breakfasts), and we started in fine fashion with Russian 'wicked witch' Galia, who'd lost four stone and whose mission was now to push her mantra of Health & Fitness down everyone's throat – as it were!

galia TV Times 30th October 2011Ann wasn't having any of it, and various weight-related jibes between the two became the order of the week. Galia's feedback form had the comment, "The hosts were a little formal to start."

"Well, I'll kiss them straight away on the lips next time," Galia retorted, and she didn't like Ann's comment about not being able to get in and out of the bed easily (as it had a hard wooden frame around it). "It might help to lose weight so they can just jump better into the bed," she replied waspishly.

I love my one-liners. I loved this, but it's tough on the last day when they all sit round a table together. Max and Diane were a lovely couple (married 40 years but still really in love), but they came in for a bit of criticism and were very upset.

It must be really hard for them to hear criticism, but if people aren't honest it defeats the object of the show. It's still a bit sad to see people whose homes/standards are getting criticised though (unless they're horrible – in which case, they deserve it!).

Young Apprentice

winner2 TV Times 30th October 2011j2 e1319974214306 TV Times 30th October 2011Oh, what a great start. The little boy in his dad's tinfoil suit got fired, but it could just as easily been James – an economist (at 17?), who could have a great career as a lookalike for the Michael Dinner character from Little Britain. Talk about pompous. He already looks like a middle-aged City trader. Rarely have I seen a lad more born (looks-wise) to his career!

He thought he was the only one who knew what he was talking about, but proved himself as a fully-qualified banker by trying to insist his team sold ice-creams for £1 each on Saarfend beach on one of this summer's rare sunny days. Luckily Harry H the Project Manager (and my early tip for the title – as well as being cute!), over-ruled him, but they still lost.

nick2 TV Times 30th October 2011However, the only way the girls won was by defrauding their customers. After having been unable to do the simple maths to work out their costings "Three fours are Twenty-Eight," (Nick's inscrutable face in the background was a picture!), they then under-ordered on their fruit, so started off with less stock than they needed.

Although they displayed a small sign, played the dirty trick of automatically adding toppings without asking, and even charged for the cones, for God's sake. They basically ROBBED people with their 'hidden extras'. (I'm sure that Trading Standards would have been very interested.)

shock TV Times 30th October 2011Every one of us will remember a moment in our lives when it's suddenly hit us that we've been royally ripped-off. That's what this was like. You saw pictures of parents' shocked faces as they were told the price, and I felt so sorry for that mother when they told her that her little girl's tiny cone was £37.50*. She was so shocked, but felt she had no option but to pay. Shame on you girls.

Apart from that it, was all jolly good stuff and a great start to the Series. Those of us on Twitter have the added advantage of a hilarious running commentary too, as everyone's watching and tweeting/re-tweeting as it goes along. Roll on Monday!

* Just kidding. £3.80 – but that's still a joke. Talking of jokes: did you see Harry Hill's Young Apprentice review on TV Burp (Saturday 29th)? Hilarious. It'll be repeated several times during this week on ITV so make sure you check it out! (Young Apprentice Episode 2 BBC1 9.00 pm Monday)

What Else?

Did you see last week's Episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with Ricky Gervais. Gervais played himself (badly), and Susie stole the show for me (as usual). What makes it so agonisingly addictive is how Larry manages to have you swing from being totally with him to totally cringing at him in an instant!

TV Times 30th October 2011Sublime TV, and apparently this week's Episode has Larry vying for the affections of the same woman as one of his lesbian friends, the indomitable Rosie O'Donnell. That should be good!

Sounds of the 20th Century

images22 e1319804776560 160x160 Sounds of the 20th CenturyThis show is SO good it's getting its own post this week.

I listened to 1976 while I was at work ironing on Wednesday and was literally overwhelmed at hearing Elton John & Kiki Dee's Don't go breaking my heart and Joan Armatrading's Love and Affection. Tears of happiness/regret and nostalgia rolled down my cheeks as the memories and emotions of the Seventeen-year-old me struck like a tidal wave.

Hearing Jeremy Vine say, "For the next hour … it's 19xx" (with the gong and the slow beat of the bass drum in the background), will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end, and then you're straight in to a fast-moving hour of music, news, current affairs and showbiz clips with NO narration, just a glorious snapshot of a year of your life.

Sounds of the 20th CenturyJeremy Thorpe resigned over an alleged homosexual affair; Jimmy Carter ran for the US Presidency; Sylvester Stallone starred in Rocky; the Bee Gees' You Should be Dancing and Abba's Dancing Queen were chart-toppers (ooh, didn't boys wear their trousers tight in those days?)! 'Nostalgia's not what it used to be', they joke. Well it is here.

I defy anyone not to be moved to tears by this programme. I guess it's best starting to listen (for optimum initial effect), from the year when you were Seventeen, as that was probably the year when you first really became aware of the world around you.

The year when you felt as if you knew it all; anything was possible; when you were most excited by this wonderful thing called 'life' and a year when you could never conceive that you would ever turn into the cynical old misery you are today!

mike Sounds of the 20th CenturyThe work that must have gone into compiling these programmes (every year from 1951-2000), is mind-boggling, and – to me – it's the best thing that has ever been on the Radio as it cannot fail to be of interest to any person alive today. Every one of us hits 'That Year' when it suddenly becomes relevant to us.

It's on the BBC iPlayer but – unbelievably – is not available as a podcast, so you only have seven days to listen to each show. I presume they'll either make them available to download at some point (or even sell them), but if you do nothing else this week, just promise me you'll listen (or at least from the first year that's 'relevant' to you).

This week (w/c 31st October), it's 1981.

The X Factor

TV Times 23rd October 2011Saturday morning: There's a load of stuff in the papers/Twitter about an X Factor crisis. Falling ratings and some of the  talentless wannabees out partying like they've already hit the big time. In their own tiny minds they think they have, but if I were them I'd have probably considered spending the week practising so that I didn't get voted off.

Frankie's been the worst offender, from what I've read. If what I've said so far is true, he'll get through again tonight – despite proving last week that he simply can't sing. And herein lies the problem.

John Adams – the certain winner – was quietly removed (for having complained about the treatment of Welsh people on the show), and Kitty went through in place of Jade. That was where it all went wrong.

The judges are now praising and hyping-up really poor performances, and there's barely one of them who'd be a worthy winner. Charlie from The Risk could win if he was solo, or a couple of the girls, but unless they ditch some of the bad actsthey'll be losing even more viewers. Let's see what happens …

Sunday morning: Twitter was hilarious last night. Here's three of my favourites:

janegarvey1 Jane Garvey: Dermot's suit is all wrong. It fits him

Hilary_W Hilary: I can't decide between watching X Factor or drinking this pint of bleach. OH WAIT YES I CAN GLUGGLUGGLUG.  Dies.

LittleMuvva Sandi Smith: I'd like kitty to come to my house and sing thru my nose #noiwouldntreally

images15 156x160 TV Times 23rd October 2011images16 160x160 TV Times 23rd October 2011The consensus seemed to be that Frankie was the worst, Johnny was Charles Hawtrey reincarnated (but did well), and that Kitty did ok (as she was one of that few that actually sang a ROCK song!).

The judges suddenly turned on each other (genuine? I think not), and it was disappointing to hear them one-again gushing over such dire performances.

They almost all sang flat (especially Sophie), and poor Sami clearly hated having to sing yet-another 'Cruise Ship' staple. If Frankie survives tonight, I'll not be best pleased!

Sunday: Sami and Kitty's 'sing off' produced the two best performances of the weekend. Sophie (someone who I wouldn't be able to pick out if she was the only person in the room until she started singing – out of tune), got through, yet Sami went.images20 e1319437234710 160x160 TV Times 23rd October 2011

Louis failed her. He never wanted her there anyway, and it was obvious he would choose Kitty (despite saying she didn't connect with the public). Sami wasn't happy; you could see that as she walked off. I hope she makes a living from her singing in the future. She had a powerful voice, great personality AND she sang in tune.

If it's about the 'X' Factor, then Sami has far more of that than Sophie or Craig. If it's about singing, why is Frankie still there? He should be ashamed of his behaviour last night. I'd watched because this Series looked as if it was going to be about the talent. Now – it seems – it's not. I shan't be watching next week.

Come Dine With Me

TV Times 23rd October 2011Last week's Episodes were the best Celebrity CDWM ever. Cleo, Bobby, Andrew and Pete bonded so well as a group (well, almost – see last week's blog!), and it was glorious and hilarious TV.

fools TV Times 23rd October 2011This week's Episodes – while entertaining – were the opposite. They all-but came out with the line, "I'm available for Panto; just call my Agent!" When Bobby Davro whipped his trousers off (as he did most nights), and bent down to reveal either his thong, 'shlong' or backside to the camera, it's a wonder he didn't have the number tattooed across it.

bob2 TV Times 23rd October 2011You couldn't have had a week of more blatant self-promotion if you'd tried. Aah, it was a happy/sad moment to see Lesley Joseph waltzing into Dove's butcher's in Northcote Road and being served by Bob. That was where I used to get meat for the family when I was a Housekeeper, and I was down there most Saturday mornings nice and early (so that I didn't have to queue for half an hour), then would buy bread from the Artisan Bakery opposite and delicious salads from my favourite market stall, before going for coffee and a quick read of the Daily Mail.

boy TV Times 23rd October 2011Now I just sit here every weekend writing this blog!  Sorry, I digress. Just reminiscing there, as it's 8.30 am Saturday as I write this; exactly the time I'd have been in Dove's. Lesley was thrilled that her meal was as good this time as it was bad last time (the meringue for her pavlova looked the best I've ever seen on a TV programme – sticky and chewy), but the whole Titanic thing just got very silly towards the end (although I did laugh at Wayne Sleep crying, "I'm drowning, I'm drowning," and Bobby replying, "Quick, someone throw him a buoy!"

Lesley was a worthy winner, but I hope it goes back to normal next week. (Oh dear. There's a new Series of Four in a Bed starting on C4 on Monday. Can I spare the time to watch it?)

Celebrity MasterChef

I sat through Friday's Episode (well, fast-forwarded most of it – I've already seen every plate of food they've cooked at least 20 times now, thanks), and just watched the last couple of minutes before plating-up. Well, I DID, but had to turn the sound off.

WHAT was that ridiculous music? That was the worst/loudest/most OTT of the Series, and was replaced by the horrible and unnecessary drone that goes on while they're being judged. Having sat through all that (Phil's food looked to die for), they said they'd be announcing the winner on … Saturday. Er, hello? Why?

phil1 TV Times 23rd October 2011Saturday's show proved to be yet-another chance to see every plate of food they'd created, and barely a moment was left at the end to announce Phil Vickery as the winner. There was no contest really. I'd have devoured everything he made, and the fact that he was an 'amateur' made it all the more remarkable. A truly worthy winner. (I wish I'd put that bet on him!)

Mary Queen of Frocks all ended happily (what a surprise!), as she achieved great sales, despite all her best-sellers being out of stock.  She was seen walking in and asking why. How come she didn't know? How come nobody told her? How come nobody did anything?

mary1 TV Times 23rd October 2011Mary's been quick to criticise other retailers for having supply issues. It seems inconceivable to me that you'd launch a range but not have enough of what appeared to have been clearly singled-out as your key item (a dress called Aurora), but hey, I'm just a customer who – on the rare occasion I go to buy clothes – will find that on a rail of 30 identical pairs of size 12 trousers there'll be  won't be a single pair of 'Long'. How does this happen in this day and age? Ooh, don't get me started …

images7 160x160 TV Times 23rd October 2011If you like this blog I'm sure you'll already be the sort who watches Harry Hill's TV Burp, (which takes a sideways look at the pick of the week's 'quirky' and funny side of TV/Soapland). TV Burp's a bit like a visual version of my Soapy Corners!

(TV Burp ITV1 Saturday 7.15 pm + many repeats on ITV2 during the week)

TV Times 23rd October 2011I've been banging-on for ages about Series 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Tonight's Episode apparently features Ricky Gervais as a 'more pompous version of himself' (is there such a thing?). I hope Larry tears him to shreds. Now that's GOT to be worth watching, surely?

The X Factor

xfac TV Times 16th October 2011Saturday: It was pretty hard to hear most of the singers (apart from Sami), as the background music was SO loud it almost drowned them out which (in most cases), was a blessing – as there was some very poor singing, and the consensus from my Twitterfeed seemed to be that the judges weren't hearing the same as us.

Louis made a right fool of himself – getting up and waving his arms around a lot – and the whole thing was a bit bemusing. The best bits were Sami (bad song choice though) and Misha – who generally looks like a Christmas Tree but looked like a giant Quality Street this week!

craig TV Times 16th October 2011frank TV Times 16th October 2011Charlie from The Risk is a great singer, but as for the rest of the boys, what is there to say? Frankie's hair looked beyond ridiculous but – more importantly – he proved that he couldn't sing a note.

Come Dine With Me

TV Times 16th October 2011When I saw it was a Celebrity special this week I almost didn't watch, but after the first two minutes was so glad I did, as I laughed and laughed at the feast of one-liners.

pete1 TV Times 16th October 2011Apart from Andrew Stone ('Starman' from Louis Spence's Pineapple Dance Studios), they were all just there for a good time, and a budding TV/Food critic was revealed as Pete Best's laconic comments had me in stitches.

It's hard to describe Pete's 'look' (except that it changed in almost every scene), but his dead-pan humour is right up my street, and he even upstaged Dave Lamb! This was his expression as he made a comment about Bobby's Main Course, "It was just chicken with rice and blackbean sauce."

Dave's response: "I'm not sure if that's your happy face or not, Pete."

Another great line was, "I'm not competitive. I don't understand why people even play football. They should give them a ball each and we can all go home."

petem TV Times 16th October 2011The piece de resistance was Pete's night. He slid into the kitchen in this outfit and announced, "I'm in the nude. Garden of Eden; Adam and Eve."

Dave quipped: "I'm not sure Adam OR Eve looked anything like you."

cleo TV Times 16th October 2011Cleo Rocos looked fabulous, and has barely aged since I used to watch her on the Kenny Everett show. I thought she was the most gorgeous and glamorous woman I'd ever seen, and she's still right up there!

She seems to have met everyone though, and Pete remarked on Thursday, "I'm terrified to ask her anything cos it'll have a story. The knife'll be from Ancient Egypt and belonged to Tutankhamun or something – and she used to date him."

I was amazed at Cleo's story of how she and Kenny Everett took Princess Diana (in disguise) to the Vauxhall Tavern. I've been there, and can't believe that the sight of Cleo Rocos alone walking-in wouldn't have caused a near-riot, and with the description of the get-up Diana was wearing, also can't believe she wouldn't have been 'hit on' by at least a dozen women before she'd got halfway through the door (if the pigeons hadn't hit on her first)!

chanm1 TV Times 16th October 2011 TV Times 16th October 2011Chantelle Houghton was CDWM's compulsory 'dumb blond'. She seems like such a nice woman, and one who totally accepts that she's not the sharpest knife in the draw. She was trying to beat up some cream for her Eton Mess but had a bit of a problem:

"How do you whip something? Use one of those spiky things? You know, a Whipper. I haven't got a Whipper. Oh, a Whisker!"

She rang a friend – who brought ice-cream instead of cream and tried to assure her it would be ok.

Friend: "Eton mess is like Baked Alaska."

Chantelle: "Isn't that a fish?"

tommy TV Times 16th October 2011The 'King of Bling' Bobby George was your typical 'geezer' who told it how it was. His separate Chinese Kitchen was impressive (brilliant not to have to have all those frying smells in the house), and I really wouldn't have expected to see a man like him stir-frying with such confidence.

andrew TV Times 16th October 2011Despite being taken-aback on meeting Pete, Bobby was more bothered by Andrew in the end, and they all just viewed him as being more famous in his mind than he'll ever be in real life (they even played the Bee Gees' song Tragedy as he walked round the corner one night). Andrew was trying desperately to compete (and not just in the cooking; he came last, by the way), but totally failed to impress any of them.

Bobby said of him, "Andrew told me: 'It'll take a long while for me to like you.' I said 'It didn't take me long to dislike you,'" and even Dave's commentary was cutting. They were going round the room talking about what Awards they'd won. Andrew's eyes were downcast as the others reeled off their list, and then Dave said "Next," but as Andrew raised his head to speak he said "Not you."

andrew2 TV Times 16th October 2011I'm sure it was just carefully edited that way, but I did feel quite sorry for Andrew, because the other four got on really well and he was the outsider, and not part of their 'gang'. I could see the hurt/envy in his eyes on more than one occasion and knew exactly how he felt (as it's the same way I feel when I'm with a group of people: like they don't really want me there but are too polite to actually say so!).

last TV Times 16th October 2011Pete's night began to the Addams Family theme tune, and the whole thing was a scream. There was also a surprise ending, as (despite his husband doing 99% of the cooking), Pete shared the honours (for his hosting mostly!), with Cleo. It was all thoroughly enjoyable.

Celebrity MasterChef

Hold the front page. There was an actual failure this week. Greg summed-up Nick's bakewell tart: "Looks like a margherita pizza."

greg TV Times 16th October 2011There was a new feature: cook a meal that evokes a memory for you. It was a really entertaining Episode – apart from the tear-jerking music and the Jaws-like drone that plays under every scene where they present their food (why? It's just not needed), and it's been quite an enjoyable week (as there's been much less Restaurant stuff).

philm TV Times 16th October 2011On the downside, there's been a lot of Greg stuffing his face with far too big a spoonful again, and the unbearable India Fisher narration. If it's so boring for you love (sounds as if it is from the way you read your lines), let someone else do it and cheer us all up.

My prediction of Phil to win looks even more certain now, as he hasn't put a fork wrong all week. His food's been exceptional, and even those pompous food critics on Friday couldn't fault it – and that's saying something! It's hard to believe he's actually able to cook at that level but, boy, he can. If he doesn't win, it's a fix!

Are you watching Curb Your Enthusiam yet? If not, I keep telling you: you're missing a treat …

(Curb Your Enthusiasm Series 8, Ep 4 More4 11.20 pm Sunday)

Despite myself, I'm still watching Mary Queen of Frocks, as she's not getting things her own way and 'real' women haven't been backwards in coming forwards telling her what they think of some of her designs. She's pushing a few noses out of joint down at House of Frazer and this week she's about to open. What will happen …

(Mary Queen of Frocks Ep 3 C4 9.00 pm Wednesday)

images7 160x160 TV Times 16th October 2011If you like this blog, I'm sure you'll already be the sort who watches Harry Hill's TV Burp, which – like me – loves to take a sideways look at the pick of the week's 'quirky' and funny side of TV/Soapland. Harry's the visual version of my Soapy Corners! (TV Burp ITV1 Saturday 7.15 pm + many repeats on ITV throughout the week)

Radio Times

Jeremy Vine's Radio 2 Series Sounds of the 20th Century (which is a glorious hour of nothing but soundbites, charting the significant music and events of every year from 1951 to 2000), is at 1979 this week. Each week it's become relevant to more and more people, and I guarantee it'll bring those memories flooding back in a flash. It's a truly wonderful hour of history/nostalgia, and is not to be missed.

(Sounds of the 20th Century Radio 2 10.00 pm every Thursday, and available on BBC iPlayer)

Other Radio things catching my eye this week are:

Radio 4Extra are repeating Clare in the Community right from the beginning. I didn't spot it in time for last week's blog, but Series 1, Episode 1 was broadcast this week and will still be on iPlayer until the next Episode is broadcast (7.00am and 5.30pm next Wednesday 19th). DO have a listen; it's delicious comedy.

The X Factor

tran TV Times 9th October 2011Who was that drag act? What; it was Kitty? You're joking me?

I was very relieved to see Louis put Sami through FIRST to the next round. I presume he's read the Press over the last week and 'Done the right thing' for once. She nailed it. Some of the others didn't.

By this stage in the Competition we're starting to get favourites. You know who mine is, although if I was a betting woman, my money would have to be on Frankie, as he's the young girls' favourite – even though he can't sing and looks like a gonk.  Just my opinion you understand!

Kelly looked as if she really was in bits about who she had to send home (unlike the 'crocodile tears' some previous judges used to 'weep'), and as I had to watch this week's shows on Fast Forward, I'll be going back and watching them again properly this afternoon (Monday) as I do a customer's ironing. I might then write more (you know me!).

Come Dine With Me

TV Times 9th October 2011It was like Jack Sprat and his wife this week, with one girl who wouldn't eat carbs and one whose idea of a good night was a cold buffet with plenty of bread and butter.

The best line of the week was, "I would rather stick live wasps up my backside – with blades on their wings – than eat that." You didn't like it much then?

Celebrity MasterChef

winner TV Times 9th October 2011I predict the winner will be Phil (somebody), who used to be a Rugby player (I'm clueless about Rugby). The food he turned-out this week was absolutely exceptional, and there's many a 'real' chef who'd have been proud to have put their name to his dishes.

gregpig TV Times 9th October 2011Greg's continued to eat as if he's a stranger to both cutlery and manners. Yes, John; it is quite hard to believe, isn't it?

Outnumbered

It was part two of the Auntie Angela storyline this week. That bit was ok – if a bit far-fetched – but by the end of it I just wanted to brain the kids. Ben and Karen's bedtime 'chat' was both tedious and ridiculous. She clearly hadn't got a clue what she was saying, and they're playing on Ben's 'random' mind way too much now.

Jake was supercilious beyond belief, and Ottfried's German accent was like something out of 'Allo 'Allo.

karben TV Times 9th October 2011It wasn't all bad, and I love seeing Sue lose that 'yummy mummy' facade, but if there's another Series they need to accept that it's time to 'move on', make it more scripted, and stop trying to 'Flog the dead horse' that the children's inital spontaneity has sadly become.

The best line was Pete's: "Ah. Tai Chi. The ancient art of attention-seeking." CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE OUTNUMBERED WEBSITE

What else?

I was going to do a proper review of the two new Series: Alex Polizzi's The Hotel Inspector and Mary Portas' Mary, Queen of Frocks which both started this week, but after watching them, I'm not going to.

images6 160x160 TV Times 9th October 2011The Hotel Inspector is SOOO predictable, and the first Episode of this new Series was no exception. Desperate Hotelier calls Alex in; she tells them the place is awful and should be painted white; Hotelier violently disagrees with everything Alex says but ends up doing it; Hotelier admits Alex was right; everyone kisses, and it all ends with a vague statement which doesn't actually tell us what happened next.

I love watching Alex Polizzi, but I'm going to have to give up on this one I'm afraid, and as for Mary Portas; I suspect it'll be a similar scenario.

mary TV Times 9th October 2011I'll watch this week's second Episode, but I think I know where this one's heading. It was interesting to see Mary shocked and tearful over people she'd contacted (in the hope that they might be able to help her but who hadn't even taken the trouble to reply), and I hope it might have made her appreciate just how upsetting and disappointing it is …

Ahem. Moving on.

I'm still banging-on about Curb Your Enthusiam. If you like wickedly black/satirical, hilarious comedy, put all seven Series of DVDs on your Christmas list right now! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE SITE/WATCH EPS

harry TV Times 9th October 2011Oops. Nearly forgot. If you like this blog, you'll probably love Harry Hill's TV Burp, which – like me – loves to take a sideways look at the pick of the week's 'quirky' and funny side of TV/Soapland. There'll always be a gem in there somewhere. His Hev's a classic and I  hope 'she' won't get written-out when EastEnders' Heather leaves!

Other Radio things catching my eye this week are:

A repeat of the Pilot Episode of Miranda, Miranda Hart's show which was originally broadcast on the Radio – and is funnier on the Radio too. (Radio 4Extra 10.30 pm Tuesday)

A new Comedy show Hard to Tell, starts this week. Will it be any good? (Radio 4 6.30 pm Tuesday)

A new satirical show Tonight, starts this week too and stars Rory Bremner – but I'll still listen. (Radio 4 11.00 pm Thursday)

So Wrong It's Right  has 'celebrity' contestants having to give wrong answers to questions, but it's funny, really! (Radio 4 6.30 pm Thursday), and Babs Windsor's Funny Girls is an interesting Series on funny women in comedy. This week it's Betty Hutton. Who? No, doesn't ring a bell with me either, but I'll look forward to finding out! (Radio 2 10.00 pm Tuesday)
