Carchelle Corner – February 2013

Carchelle Carchelle Corner February 2013February 2012

My father's in the final stages of terminal cancer. We're caring for him at home, but it's extremely demanding and I'm consequently having to try and fit my Soap-watching in whenever I'm able to grab a spare moment.

It normally takes me from first thing on Saturday morning until Monday lunchtime to produce my weekly Soapy Corners (and then I have another half a day's admin etc to do on top of that), but I'm currently struggling to have even finished watching one week's episodes before the next week's start!

Posting my last Carchelle Corner (27th January) while trying to look after my father and still do my regular ironing jobs and radio stints was so stressful that it forced me to accept that I was simply going to have to put everything else 'on hold' for the forseeable future.

I'm so sorry for this. It's just another example of the 'story of my life' though (see the 'About Me' section), but if you're a Soap-Watcher then you'll already know that whenever you think you're about to get a break in life, something comes along and kicks your legs from under you!

Carchelle Corner will resume as soon as possible. Thank you, and I hope to see you then.

Carchelle Corner – 27th January 2013

IMG 1526 Carchelle Corner 27th January 2013We've not had much #carchelle this week, have we – so there's not a lot to say, but we Carla/Michelle fans can always find something to mull over, can't we?

I was interested in this exchange between Peter and Carla in the pub.

"It's always the quiet ones you've got to watch," he proclaimed sanctimoniously.

"Do you have to be so judgemental?" she snapped back.

IMG 1517 Carchelle Corner 27th January 2013Significant? Time will tell, but we're just waiting for Peter and Carla to hurry up and split up so that we can get cracking with #carchelle!

That's it, I'm afraid. Nothing else of note really. Let's see what this week brings shall we, but I've just put this picture up of them in Church. Shame that Peter had to be sat in the middle …

Carchelle Corner – 20th January 2013

Spotted the new name?

IMG 1329 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013Yes, I've decided (after a bit of feedback from my question last week) to change the name from Carla Corner to Carchelle Corner, as anyone who's reading this is – presumably – of the same mindset as me and just waiting and hoping for Carla and Michelle to get together as a couple?

IMG 1320 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013We've had a few little bursts of #carchelle activity this week, and the eagle-eyed amongst us will have spotted that Carla got hold of Michelle's arm when they left the factory on Friday (that's the best picture I could get of it), and that Michelle has continued to look adoringly at her boss/friend across the office desk for the best part of the week!

The most interesting bit for #carchelle-watchers though, was when Michelle found out that Carla had not only taken Rob back, but had made him a partner in Underworld.

Just when they'd got all cosy again, too

IMG 1348 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013Was that a bit of jealousy in Michelle's eyes at the thought of it not just being the two of them any more? Ooh, we certainly hope so, don't we, and with Rob being such a prize prat I can envisage him a) not realising what's starting to happen right under his nose as the two grow closer (partly in solidarity against him) and b) completely freaking out when he DOES eventually find out that they're together.

IMG 1318 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013HOW good would that be? It would make for a brilliant storyline (it'd be brilliant anyway, we already know that!) for the two women to be 'as one' (in more ways than one!) and united – as a couple – against him.

It could lead to all sorts of interesting scenarios – not least that it'd hopefully see him leaving, but trying to ruin them/the business on his way out by telling all their clients that they were lesbians.

'Carchelle Enterprises' run Underworld?

Rob's the sort of bloke (like Kevin) who'd probably think that it would actually harm Carla's business to be 'outed' as a lesbian, but (as Kevin also seems to have failed to grasp) this is the 21st Century, and ROB would be the one who'd end up looking foolish and chauvinistic as Carla and Michelle proudly declared their love to the world and actually ended up gaining business from it.

IMG 1302 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013IMG 1307 Carchelle Corner 20th January 2013Ah, yes. There's so much scope and so many possibilities with this storyline and – as Steve seems to be channelling Peter now too, is that another good omen for all of us #carchelle-watchers, maybe?

Didn't we love Michelle's line to Rob: "Oh no, darling. We're not girls – we're women."

Yummy. Let's have more of that next week please, and let's just get on and get Peter and Carla split up soon so that we can get cracking with #carchelle.

Carla Corner – 13th January 2013

IMG 1088 Carla Corner 13th January 2013Many women go on a diet after Christmas.

When you go on a diet you tend to crave the things you're missing, and Corrie have put us all on the (very restrictive) Carla-Controlled diet, haven't they?

After having been gone for five whole months we were desperate to get her back and completely ecstatic to finally see those gorgeous pins stepping out of that taxi in December, but what's happened since then? Exactly … Nothing!

We're barely seen our heroine, and are gutted that she's still with Peter (who's loving himself more than anyone else these days!).

IMG 1105 Carla Corner 13th January 2013All we've had since she got back are a few snatches of her and Michelle in the office, but HOW GOOD is it to actually see them together again without Rob getting in the way all the time? 'Two's company', as they say …

The nearest we came to a #carchelle moment last week was when Carla said that she'd burned her tongue on Friday, and we were all there waiting and hoping that Michelle would offer to kiss it better, weren't we?

Michelle's been giving Carla some pretty adoring 'looks' since she's been back, hasn't she? The 'sign of things to come', perhaps? Oh, how we're WISHING for that to be the case!

The combination of Christmas and my father's rapid deterioration through cancer over the last four weeks have meant that I've barely been able to get onto Twitter, but even on the odd occasion when I have been on it I've noticed just how many #carchelle-related tweets there are out there.

IMG 1107 Carla Corner 13th January 2013Nearly all the tweets I see about how 'hot' both Carla and Michelle look come from (supposedly straight!) women, and so many of them (either literally or by suggestion) also say how much they actually 'fancy' one (or both) of them.

IMG 1096 Carla Corner 13th January 2013As I've said many times on here now: this is a completely unique situation. There's never been a Soap character (that I can recall) who's ever provoked such adoration as Carla Connor, and the amount of women who want to see her and Michelle get together as a couple is something that I'm hoping the show's producers are now not only now fully aware of but are hopefully considering acknowledging at some point?

IMG 1099 Carla Corner 13th January 2013Let's make it our 2013 wish for them to finally share a kiss, shall we, #carchelle fans, and all do everything we can to champion our cause and make sure that everyone gets to know just how desperate we are for the Soap storyline of the Century to finally happen.

When you think of Soaps' most iconic moments (Dirty Den handing Angie her divorce papers on Christmas Day still makes me tingle all over when I think about it – it's even doing it now as I write this line), I feel that this storyline could potentially be even bigger than that (and oh, how I'd love to be the one writing it too!).

IMG 1101 Carla Corner 13th January 2013Peter dumps Carla. She's devastated and can only rely on her closest friend Michelle for comfort. As they grow closer still, they begin to realise that what they feel for each other is a lot more than just friendship.

Ok, and breeaathe

That's all there is today (as there's so little else to report this week), but I'll be #carchelle-watching next week, and as long as we actually GET a bit of Carla there'll be a Carla Corner!

Carla Corner – 16th December 2012

Carla Sean Carla Corner 16th December 2012Cheated and broken-hearted.

No, not Carla … US.

Desperate, we were. Desperate for her and Michelle's big reunion clinch, but it was Sean (the gay man: significant?) who was the lucky recipient of the Connor arms around him and the Connor lips on his face on Monday. The only proper hug we got to see between them was when Carla left again.

IMG 0833 Carla Corner 16th December 2012If you looked carefully, you could just see her arm on Michelle's shoulder at one point (when she was talking to Rob in the office), but we didn't see the actual reunion, although I reckon it would have come the second after the camera cut-away here (as that would have been their first moment alone).

Look at her face. If Carla Connor looked at you like that, you'd be expecting a kiss (at the very least) to follow, wouldn't you?

IMG 0930 Carla Corner 16th December 2012Even though we were on the edge of our seats we didn't get another clinch until Friday (we never got to see them in Michelles' flat), and if you looked closely (as I'm sure we all did), it looked for a millisecond as if it was going to be a proper full-on kiss, but the Connor lips sadly ended up on Michelle's cheek.

Gutted doesn't even come close to the disappointment we felt, does it, and as if that wasn't bad enough, she's now gone and left us again! I haven't seen any spoilers so don't know what's happening, but I just hope it's not going to be too long before she's back.

IMG 0917 2 Carla Corner 16th December 2012"You're not talking about going for good, are you?" Michelle asked.

"I am, baby. I'm sorry," Carla replied sadly.

IMG 0798 Carla Corner 16th December 2012You couldn't blame her though, I guess? "I can do without it. I can do without ANY of it," she admitted to Michelle after Peter had told her she had to go and pick Simon up from school.

She'd looked unhappy from the moment she stepped out of the taxi, and within seconds it was already pretty-much back to how it had been before they left, with her needs being totally ignored as everything revolved around Peter.

Being a Barlow's enough to turn anyone to drink

IMG 0800 Carla Corner 16th December 2012Carla's not a family-type person, and even seeing her sat at Ken and Deirdre's table looked and felt wrong. She could never be a part of a family unit like that – unlike Leanne, who's such a great mother to Simon and just looks and 'feels' to be a part of the Barlow clan.

Now that Peter's staying though, we all know where that one's heading, but what of Carla? She said that being back was bad for her for so many reasons – not least the drinking.

IMG 0805 e1355691517357 Carla Corner 16th December 2012If I was stuck in a situation like that I'D drink too, but if she was with someone who REALLY loved her and who didn't have an ex-wife and young child in the same street then it could (and would) be a whole different story, wouldn't it?

To be honest: Carla looked tired and drawn all week. The poor woman's got troubles in her private life which – no matter how good an actor you are – can't help but show in your face … either that, or she's just been deliberately going without makeup and a good night's sleep in order to make it all look more realistic. Either way; she's had nothing but heartache from men and deserves a proper relationship and a bit of real happiness now.

More than 'Just Good Friends'?

IMG 0927 Carla Corner 16th December 2012Come on Corrie. We need her to arrive back a second time and for Michelle to be her rock while she comes to terms with seeing Peter with Leanne and for them to both realise and accept that their feelings for each other are actually more than just friendship.

IMG 0830 Carla Corner 16th December 2012This could be one of Coronation Street's biggest storylines ever: with two older women becoming the first-ever 'proper' professional lesbian Soap couple. Look how Michelle was looking at Carla with pride and adoration as she tore Rob to shreds. That's love, that is!

Sophie and Sian's was a ground-breaking storyline for them (and I know we've got Sophie's new inter-racial lesbian relationship coming up next year), but this is something totally different.

It's a lot easier for younger viewers to relate to Sophie – as 'lipstick lesbianism' (and showing a lot of affection towards your female friends) is now considered perfectly normal to that generation, but a growing percentage of 'older' women are leaving heterosexual relationships to begin new lives with female partners.

Give us Carchelle for Christmas!

IMG 0932 Carla Corner 16th December 2012IMG 0825 Carla Corner 16th December 2012Emmerdale have got Misery Ali and Ruby, but it's not the same thing at all. Putting Michelle and Carla together would be SUCH a coup for Corrie.

All we can do is hope that 'the powers that be' see the potential and give us #Carchelle fans what we're so desperate for …

Let's hope it's not too long before we see her back on the cobbles again, aye?

PS

IMG 0863 Carla Corner 16th December 2012* When Rob accused her (in front of a client) of either suffering from jet-lag – or having drunk too many duty frees, did you hear that lovely little "Ooh," she did? Worth a second look on ITV Player (Mon, 8.30)!

* It wasn't nice to see her fall in the playground, was it? Great acting, and if you're not already on Twitter and following @MrsConnorsLegs then you really should be. I don't know who's behind it, but they've got a sense of humour worthy of the lady herself.

* As if getting Carla back hasn't been excitement enough; here's a lovely little compilation video Twitter's @AlisonKingFansx put together of all Carla's best bits from last week and has kindly allowed me to use: CLICK HERE TO VIEW

Carla Corner – 2nd December 2012

Just a little taster for you:

Carla's back in the next few days, but Twitter's been on fire with a photo of Ali and Kym kissing at an Awards ceremony last weekend.

Carla Michelle Carla Corner 2nd December 2012I'm not using that photo. I prefer this one (as I love the look on their faces), but the reason I've done this little taster is because I just wanted to ponder the fact that a) two actresses are choosing to be photographed holding hands and kissing each other full on the lips and b) it's been reproduced so often since and talked about so much in the media.

Doesn't this just go to show how Lipstick lesbianism is now seen as such a 'fashionable' and accepted part of life today that two major Soap actresses would think nothing of kissing each other in public?

From the very first time I ever wrote about Carla's tenderness and demonstrable affection towards Michelle I've suggested and hoped that the Coronation Street writers would someday bring them together as a lesbian couple.

My detective work pointing out all the little looks and touches etc has gained considerable support among Carla fans (hence Carla Corner for a start!), and seeing Ali and Kym in shots like the one above only add credence to my case.

Putting these two together as a couple would (in my opinion) be one of Coronation Street's biggest-ever storylines and a certain ratings-winner for ITV. To me it's a no-brainer. Both have been constantly let down by one loser bloke after another and – as best friends – they're closer to each other than to anyone else in the world.

What's about to happen?

I've read on Twitter this weekend that Carla might only be back for a week and then be off again. I'm certainly hoping that's NOT the case, as – after five (well-deserved) months away, we're desperate to have her back (and to send Rob packing, with a bit of luck), and it might be all too much for Carla fans to take if she legged it again so soon.

We'll have to see what happens there, but I think we're all clear as to what's about to happen when they DO arrive back on Monday 10th December. There will be a full Carla Corner on 16th December. Only eight days to go until we get to see her again …

PS If you love the thought of Carla and Michelle getting together then you might like to put my novel 'Just Good Friends?' on your Christmas list. It's the story of close friends Ruth and Helen, whose drunken kiss leads to a whole lot more and is available as a paperback on Amazon and to download on all eReader formats (and at a new, low price of only £2.99!)

Carla Corner – 13th November 2012

.

Big news!

Just read on Twitter (Tuesday 13th November) that Peter's going to dump Carla and declare his love for Leanne in scenes to be shown in Coronation Street next month.

carchelle Carla Corner 13th November 2012

I'd read this spoiler several months ago but haven't actually seen it confirmed until this morning, and it's the news that #carchelle fans everywhere have been waiting for!

As if we weren't desperate enough for Carla to return from a four month absence, we're now holding our breath even more in the hope that it'll be the start of a storyline leading to her and Michelle getting together as a couple.

To have an older, professional lesbian couple would be a first for any Soap and an amazing coup for Coronation Street.

If this is the first time you've read this page, then it's something I started after spotting (over a year ago now) that the normally cold and distant character Carla Connor showed a lot of physical affection towards her best friend (and sister-in-law) Michelle.

She constantly touches, kisses and hugs Michelle in a way that you would only do with someone that you're attracted to, and I started pointing out each occurrence in my Corrie Corner blogs every week.

People began to latch onto it; someone on Twitter coined the name #carchelle, and the rest – as they say – is history, with a whole army of #carchelle fans out there now who are all just as desperate as me to see our two favourite women together as a couple.

I've tweeted Carla Corner to Michelle (Kim Lomax) and she's said that she likes the idea and has shown the posts to Carla (Alison King).

Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but there's a lot of us wishing for it …

* Coronation Street have a new sponsor, and a small number of sites (my own Carla Corner included!), have been selected to give you a sneak peek at the brand new advert (which won't be shown on screen until November 19th).

If you retweet my tweet before the 19th you'll be entered into a draw to win one of THREE Meerkat dolls I've been given by the sponsors Comparethemarket.com  have provided as prizes, so enjoy this great little video and then get tweeting!

Carla Corner – 29th July 2012

Alas, there IS no Carla Corner this week.

Michelle Steve Carla Corner 29th July 2012There hasn't been anything to say, has there? Will Michelle cave in under Steve's relentless attentions, or might Rob sweep her off her feet? I don't want to think about either of those scenarios, but I guess it'll be one or the other …

As long as she doesn't forget Carla, we Carchelle fans can only hope that 'absence makes the heart grow fonder', can't we?

Missing Carchelle?

If you are, then trust me: you really should be reading my novel "Just Good Friends?" It's the story of two women: Magazine editor Helen, and her best friend, yummy-mummy Ruth, and explores just how easily it is to cross the line from a loving friendship into actual love.

What happens between Ruth and Helen may certainly help you cope with your frustration at Carchelle not actually having happened (yet?)!

Carla Corner – 22nd July 2012

turnup Carla Corner 22nd July 2012(Do check out my post 'The Carla Connor Phenomenon' (15th July) by clicking on Carla Corner if you haven't seen it yet and aren't in that section as you read this post.)

It's an extra-long Carla Corner today. We've got a lot to think about after the events of the last few weeks, and I want to consider what might happen next.

quay Carla Corner 22nd July 2012I'm guessing we were all in floods on Monday night? It was all very emotional, and everyone played a blinder. It's felt a bit strange watching Corrie since though, and we just have to be thankful that it's only a four-month break and not 'goodbye forever' (especially to those legs!).

I have to admit to finding their whole leaving storyline a bit far-fetched though. After the way that Peter had so cruelly told Carla to get out (and blamed the whole thing on her), how on earth could she have then believed his feeble excuse of 'not being able to lose her' and telling her that asking Leanne to get back with him was just a 'last desperate throw of the dice'?

Second best … and deep down, she knows it

strees Carla Corner 22nd July 2012What if Leanne had said YES to taking him back, Carla? Would he have given a stuff about you then? No, of course not.

Unfortunately, if you're either in love with – or infatuated by – someone you don't listen to logic or reason; you SO want to believe what they tell you that you're simply blind to the truth, and this is what has happened to Carla.

How this strong, independent, feisty woman can have allowed a man like Peter to have made her lose all sense of reality (to such an extent that she'd leave her business, lifestyle – and red wine), to agree to sail a boat across the Atlantic is a bit unrealistic – to say the least. Carla gets the jitters if she chips her nail varnish. Can we seriously believe she'd have gone with him?

She'll soon be 'all at sea'

Carla Peter1 Carla Corner 22nd July 2012If they'd gone to Barcelona or Monarco to boat-sit someone's luxury yacht I could have possibly believed that, but not this storyline. I also can't believe that she could have left with only one large holdall. For four months? Surely that bag wouldn't have even been big enough to hold her makeup, let-alone her clothes!

Four hours – ok, four days maximum – will probably have been enough for the doubts to have started setting in, and I predict that she'll be back: older, wiser, and furious with herself to have been taken in by a selfish, self-centered pig who simply needs someone to adore him.

Lea1 Carla Corner 22nd July 2012I've lost count of the amount of times Peter's been called a 'selfish pig' over the last few months, and if you look back over his behaviour you'll see that's exactly what he IS. Peter's only thought (apart from himself) is of Simon, and what a storyline it'll be when he returns in November to claim both his son AND Leanne.

Blind Freddie couldn't have missed that look on Leanne's face when Nick hugged her and said they could now be the family that Simon needed. That was not a happy face. Oh, no, it's PETER she wants, and I predict here and now that that's what's going to happen. (Well, that's what I'm praying will happen, anyway!)

The clues:

Don't forget: we're not meant to know they've only gone for four months, but this is why I think they won't stay together:

* Four months away from her designer frocks, handbags and makeup?

* Four months on a boat? A woman who never leaves the house without looking drop-dead gorgeous?

* Four months away from her business: the thing that drives her?

* She's a city girl (well, Weatherfield!), and was not designed for a life away from 'civilisation'.

* Peter treated her SO badly in the couple of weeks before they left. How can that not be in her mind?

* Peter can't settle to anything, and the thought of Simon will lure him back … and back to Leanne.

* Carla told him he 'needed time and space to sort himself out'. Doesn't sound like the words of someone who's 100% committed/not coming back, does it?

No more Corrie babies please

coffee1 Carla Corner 22nd July 2012We've got plenty of babies in the Street at the moment, and the one thing I really don't want is for Carla to come back pregnant. I've said it before: the character of 'Carla Connor' would be ruined forever if she became a mother.

It's her independence that makes her so different from all other Soap women, and is what we Carla-lovers admire about her (apart from her dazzling beauty, etc!).

PS If Rob's surname is Donovan, then Carla must have been Carla Donovan before she became Carla Connor. Not half such a good-sounding name, is it?

Carchelle Corner

stop Carla Corner 22nd July 2012Soap storylines are plotted months before we see them on screen, so I'm wondering how significant Carla leaving – having shouted at Michelle, and not 'making up' before she left, will prove to be?

We Carchelle lovers felt robbed at not seeing a final desperate hug between the pair, but – think on – what if that's all part of the plot?

In the parallel universe that we inhabit here in Carchelle Corner, this is what we need to remember:

* Carla left with Peter, but knowing that he'd tried to get back together with Leanne first.

* Four months on a boat with him will make her realise that they really have very little in common.

* The thought of having left on bad terms with Michelle will have torn her apart.

* As her infatuation with the alcoholic, smoking bookie finally abates, she'll realise that the one thing she misses more than anything is her closest friend.

* The arguments between her and Peter will intensify as both of them realise they're with the wrong person, and Carla will arrive back on the Street in November:

A) just as Michelle's at rock bottom over Ryan, and as they see each other, they fall into each other's arms and both apologise tearfully for their part in what had happened, OR

B) broken by Peter's betrayal, as she'll have found out (in yet-another of their constant arguments), that he'd been in contact with Leanne and had admitted he was missing her), and their row is forgotten as Michelle takes Carla in her arms. Either of those will do!

love1 Carla Corner 22nd July 2012Carla has also accepted that Michelle had told Leanne she was leaving with Peter not just for Simon's sake, but because she KNEW that Peter wasn't right for her.

More importantly though, Michelle simply hadn't wanted her to go because she had feelings for her but knew she couldn't tell her about them while she was infatuated with Peter. Carla will have realised that she cannot trust ANY man, and that the only person she CAN trust (and the one person who loves her unconditionally), is Michelle.

desperate Carla Corner 22nd July 2012Whatever scenario it is, in that first moment they embrace, there's a close-up of both of their faces showing love and relief at just being back together again. The emotion is a jolt, as it just confirms what they'd both been thinking: that their feelings were more than just a deep and loving friendship … and so their romance storyline begins.

Do we like that? This could be one of Coronation Street's biggest storylines/ratings-winners ever. Carla and Michelle would make an amazing Soap couple. There's so many possibilities that – to me – it would be a crime to let this opportunity pass by.

missing Carla Corner 22nd July 2012Soaps are very good at laying the foundations for storylines months in advance with little clues that often go unnoticed. The clues I've been pointing-out for nearly a year now might prove to have been nothing more than wishful thinking and an overactive imagination, but you could (if you chose to), combine all those clues to prove conclusively that this is a relationship destined to happen.

sleep with Carla Corner 22nd July 2012What's Michelle thinking here, for example? How much she misses Carla? These might be a couple of lines to add to the list:

Leanne (to Carla and Michelle): "Can you just have your domestic later?"

Michelle: "You've got no right to employ someone without asking me."

Rob: "I'm just giving her (Eva) a chance – like Carla did with you when she took YOU on."

Michelle: "Yeah, except her decision wasn't based on who she wanted to bed."

As for Carla/Carchelle Corner …

I'm not sure what to do. I feel that it might be best to give myself a break until just before Carla's return, as I don't earn any money for writing my Soapy Corners and my time would be better spent doing something which might pay me, wouldn't it?

eyes Carla Corner 22nd July 2012On the other hand … if Michelle's storylines have things in them that we (as Carchelle lovers) might find relevant, then how could I NOT report back/discuss them on here?

I guess we'll have to see how it goes over the next couple of weeks.

PS I've really liked Michelle's hair this week.

The Carla Connor phenomenon

article The Carla Connor phenomenonMany Soap characters take an extended break – either to cover a real life pregnancy, personal crisis, or simply as an opportunity to just recharge their batteries after an extremely protracted storyline.

Last night saw the departure of Coronation Street's Carla Connor for a four-month break, and – boy – does she deserve it.

Having been viciously raped by fellow factory owner (and fiancée) Frank Foster, Carla not only lost her Court case against him but was also placed under suspicion for his subsequent murder. Carla sunk into a depression and found herself increasingly drawn to alcoholic bookie Peter Barlow.

They eventually began an affair which not only destroyed his marriage, but led to a bitter custody battle with ex-wife Leanne over their son Simon. Determined to get his own way – as usual – Peter removed Simon from school and attempted to leave the Country without Leanne's knowledge.

The Carla Connor phenomenonThings didn't quite go to plan though, and it came down to the little lad having to make a choice between his parents on the concourse of Manchester's Piccadilly station. He chose his mum, so Peter and Carla boarded a train to Southampton on the first part of their journey to go and sail a boat around the Atlantic.

"Just another dramatic Soap exit," you might think, but what's unusual about this storyline is the incredible outpouring of grief from WOMEN … not at the loss of Peter, but of Carla.

Not since the days when teenagers swooned over Kylie and Jason in Neighbours has a Soap character evoked such passion, but Carla Connor's not some teenage heartthrob; she's a 37-year-old knicker factory owner from Weatherfield.

Is there a twist to this tale?

Twitter's been buzzing for weeks with tweets from Carla's hugely devoted fan base of mostly 'straight' women who openly talk of their love and devotion to both Carla Connor and the actress who plays her.

In an age where 'lipstick lesbianism' is big news in the media (and lesbian couples grace the front cover of many a newspaper or magazine), it's not surprising that so many women feel completely at ease in tweeting about their feelings towards the stunningly-attractive actress Alison King.

What's curious here though is that Carla Connor (a normally emotionally cold character) behaves in a far more relaxed way with her sister-in-law Michelle than would be expected of any straight woman, and the pair of them are always extremely tactile towards each other.

looks1 The Carla Connor phenomenonThe Twitter hashtag for Carla and Michelle fans is #Carchelle, and Carchelle lovers are particularly distressed by the fact that Carla left last night having argued with her closest friend.

Since the iconic 'Brookside kiss' in 1993 lesbians have only played a minor role in British Soap Operas. It was Coronation Street which gave us our first 'real' lesbian couple in 2010 when teenage friends Sophie and Sian began a relationship which culminated in Sian fleeing the church (and leaving the show) on their wedding day, having discovered that Sophie had kissed another girl.

Fifty Shades of Grey has taken the world by storm, but there's also a huge body of 'straight' women who are clearly attracted to feminine-looking women, which is something the media (with the exception of the women's fiction market currently) uses to its advantage at every opportunity.

Although Emmerdale currently have a lesbian couple (Ruby and Ali), their relationship is very low-key, so will Coronation Street capitalise on the chemistry between this pair and bring us our first grown-up 'lipstick lesbian' relationship when Carla returns in November?

Carla Corner – 15th July 2012

Peter1 Carla Corner 15th July 2012yum Carla Corner 15th July 2012I couldn't believe my ears when Peter started laying in to Carla like that. "I'm losing the one good thing in my life," was one of the least shout-ey but most hurtful things he said.

"What do you want? Have you forgotten one of your designer frocks?" he spat when she went back to try to patch things up. She shouldn't even have had her frocks in there in the first place. They'll stink of stale smoke by now.

"You knew that me and Si and Leanne were really happy, but you just carried on, didn't you? You just ploughed on regardless until you got what you wanted," he railed. What a pig.

coffee Carla Corner 15th July 2012"I just can't stand it any more," Carla cried, and – quite rightly – left.

Not before time, too. She should have packed her bags the very first time he started on at her. "That place might be full of horrible memories, but I cannot keep walking in here and making new ones with you," she told him in despair.

The wallpaper in Carla's flat is a horrible memory to me, but I'd rather have her there than stuck in Peter's tatty old gaff. She looked like a fish out of water there, and I'm very glad she's out of it.

PS I didn't want to put photos of them fighting up on here. We all saw it on TV; we don't need reminding of how awful it was. This is Carla Corner.  We're here to talk about our heroine, so I've chosen nice photos of her for you instead!

Best form of defence is attack

sad Carla Corner 15th July 2012Peter's conveniently forgotten that had he been a better parent to Simon – and not had an affair – he wouldn't have lost him, but to blame it all on Carla was just shameful (but typical). He made it sound to Leanne as if SHE'D been the one doing all the running and that he was merely a 'moth to her flame'.

What a load of old rubbish. He knew exactly what he was doing, and it was so typical of Peter to try to blame somebody else for his mistakes/behaviour. He's like a small child who – even when caught in the act of drawing all over the walls, looks down at the pen in his hand and still says, 'It wasn't me'.

Please don't forgive him …

smile Carla Corner 15th July 2012My biggest fear (and the reason I'm dreading watching next week's episodes) is that Carla will let him talk her round, forgive him and then actually leave with him. I'm sorry, but Carla would never give him another chance after finding out that he'd tried to get back together with Leanne, would she?

If she hadn't known, then fair enough, but now that she does … well, it just doesn't ring true, does it?

How could she imagine they could ever be happy again – knowing that he'd tried to get back together with Leanne? How could she ever trust him? It would eat away at her. It's almost as if he's 'had an affair' with Leanne, because he was actually thinking of the three of them being a family again. What woman could get over that? Even a doormat like me would struggle with that one, and Carla's no doormat!

Carchelle Corner

love Carla Corner 15th July 2012cosy Carla Corner 15th July 2012Let's try and look to the future.

Carchelle fans will have been relieved to get a bit of a fix this week. Seeing them tucked-up in the office (their little 'sanctuary') was lovely – until Carla's brother Rob suddenly rolled up with his cheeky banter and a degree in 'running an knicker factory'.

That was a stroke of luck, wasn't it: just when Carla's about to leave?

"Dangerous, this one. You should watch yourself," Stella said as Carla approached him at the bar.

eyeup Carla Corner 15th July 2012"I already know that," Carla replied.

"I wasn't talking to you," she retorted cattily.

Don't get me wrong: Rob's fine (he doesn't look much like Carla, but how could you find any man gorgeous enough to actually look like her brother?), and as long as he keeps his attention turned on Eva (or anyone else, frankly) and not Michelle, we'll be fine. That is not a relationship I'd like to see happen and – besides – Michelle's got her eyes on something far more good looking than him, as you can see!

Even in this first week, they've come across as having more of a 'brother and sister' sort of friendship than a sexual one. Let's just hope it stays that way. We need Michelle to save herself for Carla, please.

looks Carla Corner 15th July 2012Notice how Michelle reminded Carla what a waste of space Peter was? Of course you did! We Carchelle lovers are on the lookout for ANY 'sign' that we'll be able to be look back at and say, "Ah, do you remember how they looked at each other that way or said such-and-such that time?" etc, if and when the big moment actually comes!

close Carla Corner 15th July 2012I think Michelle looked jealous when Carla was saying that she loved Peter still. Did I imagine that? Oh, only time will tell.

Michelle's certainly looking and sounding like she'll be a worthy and formidable stand-in while Carla's away. I personally don't like how Rob's walked straight in and – just because he's a man – suddenly feels to have assumed authority over the pair of them (especially after having salvaged that contract).

I don't even remember Carla talking about a brother. Soaps do this a lot: suddenly 'invent' long-lost relatives that have never even been mentioned before. In all that stuff with Frank, there'd have been plenty of opportunity to mention a brother in prison, but I don't recall any mention of him.

hug Carla Corner 15th July 2012I'd always imagined Carla to have no relatives. She's barely ever spoken about them (except when her mother died – so that she could be traumatised by it and drink too much in order to add weight to the Peter/affair storyline).

Anyway, never mind all that. We got to see lots of Michelle hugging and comforting Carla, and that always makes us happy. They just look so natural together, and even more so when they're close.

Surely Carchelle has to happen? The more I think about it (and see how many others agree with me), the more convinced I am that this would be an absolute gift for the writers and a guaranteed ratings winner!

Carla Corner – 8th July 2012

Top Carla Corner 8th July 2012Another tough week for Carla lovers. We only got to see her on Friday, but was that even our Carla? She was dressed in a girly bat-winged blouse that would have done Hyacinch Bouquet proud.

balloon Carla Corner 8th July 2012Let's get this straight: Carla Connor would look stunning in a bin bag (especially because bin bags are black), but flowing, flowery 'mumsy' blouses are NOT her. They just don't suit her character. Blimey. At this rate she'll be shopping in Boden before the month's out!

It was so out of character that Simon didn't even recognise her (or maybe that was just his excuse for ignoring her during the whole of his party?), and I don't think Peter was very enamoured either.

Peter's mind's clearly on other things. Carla Connor is the best thing that will ever happen to that man, but it hasn't taken him long to start taking her for granted.

He ought to be worshipping the ground she walks on, but instead he's having thoughts about Leanne. Who's to say what goes on in someone's head, but you don't usually realise what you've lost until it's gone, and he, Leanne and Simon were a family. He also can't bear the thought of the pair of them being with his 'rival' Nick, and Peter's such a self-centered bloke he'd always take that bit personally.

shrug Carla Corner 8th July 2012If you read this blog weekly it's probably because you're a Carla and/or Carchelle fan and struggle to wonder how every man (and woman) in the world's not in love with Mrs C, but that's clearly not the case or there'd be a lot of single women and disappointed men on the cobbles!

Anyway, the 'big' week's coming. "Peter dead?" the headlines scream out from the Soap magazines. No, of course he's not, but what's going to happen? There might be floods all over the Country, but we're preparing ourselves for a Carla drought – and we're not looking forward to it.

Oh dear. I think Carla Corner's going to have to take a 'Summer' (what Summer?) break until she's back. It's hard to write about someone who's not on-screen, as my Soapy Corners are written in response to what we've seen on-screen that week.

#Carchelle Corner

Carla Corner 8th July 2012It's also hard to write Carchelle Corner when we haven't even had Michelle on-screen – let-alone the two of them together! Yes, it's been another Michelle-free week, so I'm certainly hoping we get an emotional, teary goodbye before Carla gets on that train.

Thank goodness Michelle will be able to run the business in Carla's absence. Let's hope nobody comes in and tries to take over or interfere (!) They run Underworld together. It's 'their' business. I'm not sure Michelle would be happy if someone came in and started lording-it over her.

Carchelle Comments

Here's one from oracleofdelphi: Just read the whole thing from start to end. I love the idea of them as a couple. I have to admit I do have a bit of a crush on Carla, but Michelle is more my crush – especially since she came back …

I'll follow this for a while. Hope the producers take note. Seems there are alot of fans who'd like to see that particular storyline.
